Success through independence, integration, and interruptions

Bellarmine College Preparatory

Bellarmine is a private Jesuit school for boys that sends 95 percent of its students to four-year colleges. Coordination between the library and the curriculum is seen as essential, since contemporary issues are stressed, independent study is encouraged, and seniors are expected to complete projects using college-level references. The four-year preparatory curriculum relies heavily on print and non-print resources, and on the skills needed to utilize them well.

Faculty members at Bellarmine have learned to ask Joan Lungard, the library media teacher, for very specific services. Last spring, they asked, among other things, for help with a multicultural unit on "What Is an American?" and for ideas on securing a native American lecturer. Joan subsequently made plans to present a native American speaker in the library this fall and has been scrambling to fill other requests. She and her staff will work closely to help teachers and students make the most of all vital resources.

Four times during each school year, teachers receive Library Update, a multi-page publication that supplies teaching ideas, features volunteers and library personnel, lists new acquisitions, and adds timely information --- sometimes serious, sometimes entertaining. The library's motto is: Interruptions are what we are here for. Its goal: To get you the resources you need before you need them.
