A Good Ideas encore! Mesa Verde High School | |||
Featured in the 1991 edition of Good Ideas, Mesa Verde High School and its library media teacher, Bill Sears, have again put innovative ideas to work, this time in a combination of technology with an unusual collaborative group --- Sacramento senior citizens. A pilot program at Mesa Verde links this senior high school with SeniorNet Learning Centers in Sacramento. Students with communication difficulties or at risk of dropping out were involved first. Social science topics of high interest, such as personal remembrances of Pearl Harbor, recollections of news events, and observations about the ecology, were expanded on by senior citizens who were anxious to establish a personal connection with their online communicators. Because it was a pilot project, teachers, students, and library media teacher learned as they went. Senior citizens online helped define the curriculum and were responsive to student needs. . The intent of the program, funded through Pacific Telephone, is to extend these activities to all teachers and students who would like to incorporate the project into their curriculum. Congratulations to Bill Sears and his fellow staff members for another good idea!
