1994 President's Award Winners Ruby Ling-Louie and Dale Buboltz

When South Gate Junior High School and its "dynamic duo" of Dale Buboltz and Dr. Ruby Ling-Louie were featured in the 199 1 issue of Good Ideas! this statement concluded the article: "Ruhy and Dale are Information Power personified." The description still holds true, according to enthusiastic staff and students at South Gate Junior High School and to a much broader community as well. Both have been recognized with numerous honors and awards, including recognition as American Heroes in Education by the Reader's Digest in 1992. They have reached far beyond their own school boundaries as volunteers in other library efforts, and as spokespersons for the importance of library media instruction, educational technology, and reading.

Ruby Ling-Louie and Dale Buboltz are enthusiastic promoters of reading
The winning personalities and dedication of these two are certainly pervasive, as they serve an astoundingly large student body of some 4,000 students, a considerable number of whom have entered with limited skills in English. Ruby and Dale teach in classrooms as well as the library media center; they sponsor countless activities to encourage learning, reading, and multicultural understanding, they work tirelessly with parents and teachers. In doing so, they have had the wholehearted support of their principal, Anthony Sandoval, who says of them: "They are archetypes of school librarians. They are information specialists to the community. Finally, they are instructional consultants to our teachers."

The list of their projects, sponsorships, teaching activities, technology, and professional involvements is too long to include here. Perhaps the finest indication that they are truly making a difference comes from' students in Norma Williamson's beginning ESL class, who affirm, "If, someday, we turn out to be librarians, we hope we can be as good as Mr. Buboltz and Mrs. Ling-Louie!"
