"Do We Get to Come Back Tomorrow?"

Lincoln Elementary

Instructional strategies, research components, fine arts enrichment, technology requirements, and assessment techniques are clearly articulated in lesson plans for the collaborative units of study at Lincoln Elementary. Terminology such as "discipline-based art education" and "site licensing" are commonly understood elements. The result of all this planning is memorable learning experiences for kids, with creativity playing a large part in their "Wow!" responses.

A display for teachers on how to integrate the arts into all areas of the curriculum.
First graders used watercolors to paint a sea creature that was later included in a class book; second graders made papier-mâché insect sculptures; third graders created an original video with percussion sound background, showing aspects of the early Indian cultures of the area; sixth graders also produced a video, enhanced by scanned images; and fifth graders dramatized the timeline of American history, studying the work of four American artists as part of the timeline.

A variety of electronic and print tools are used at Lincoln, and lots of adult assistance is required. Debby Stanley and her full-time library technician enlist the aid of parent volunteers to keep groups small and personal. Students say, "I never thought research could be so much fun!"

A significant clue to the sophistication of the staff at Lincoln is the fact that each member of the faculty is completing the Language Development Specialist credential. Debby's monthly newsletter offers further ideas to teachers and parents to guarantee that none of the valuable tools she can offer will go unused.
