Library Bids on Bach's Lunches

Authors

Renaissance music in the Hoover Library.
With approximately 3,000 students, half of whom are still working to increase their English proficiency, Hoover High School is a composite of many needs and interests. Special-interest clubs reach beyond the curriculum to involve students; teachers collaborate with each other to focus attention on interesting topics.

Within the library media center, many displays of student work are featured. This year three "Bach Lunches," also in the center, featured performances by students and faculty, and nearby high schools were invited to three "Coffee Houses" for the reading of original poetry. Additional collaborative projects have been "Castles and Kings," "5,000 Years of History," and "Shakespeare Lives."

In a unique effort to make the research process exciting and comprehensible, students in the library science classes serve other students by making printouts for them. Search strategy forms are used, and next-day service is guaranteed. In addition, peer tutoring is provided daily after school (except on Friday) by qualified students. Tutoring and library assistance is even offered by appointment to the local elementary school library.

With its comprehensive collection of technology and software, Hoover's library is heavily used. New approaches and applications continue to be added and promise to be of significant benefit to both staff and students.
