Quilting Gifts for the Community

Douglass School

During the first year that K. E. Hones has been employed as a full-time library media teacher at Douglass School, she has been intensely involved in the creation by students of "Story quilts." The quilts are a creative activity tying together studies of cultures, literature, design; and handicraft, with the concept of service learning. Leadership in the project is provided by a team of two. classroom teachers and the library media teacher.

Proud students at Douglass School display their quilts.
The quilt project is multi-graded, with completed quilts donated to a child terminally ill with AIDS or to a neighborhood hospice. When the project was introduced, one primary student also expressed a desire to make something for the homeless man he sees on the way to school.

Fabric designs for the quilts were based on cultural studies. A story, biography, or historical event from the culture provided themes. Student journals recorded the process and provided an opportunity to express feelings as well. Photographs have recorded all stages of the project. In this way writing, history, art, health, careers, and community responsibility have been merged into a significant experience for each child
