1996 Technology Award

Barbara Simmons

Barbara Simmons, library media teacher at Channel Islands High School in Oxnard, is the 1996 recipient of the CSLA Technology Award, sponsored by Winnebago Software Company. This award is presented annually to a library media teacher whose activities reflect the use of technology as a tool for learning and integration of technology into the curriculum.

In her seven years at Channel Islands, she transformed an old-fashioned library into a state-of-the-art media center. As a mentor for her district and school, she has guided the integration of technology into classroom curricula as well as teaching its use in research. Best described as a library media center superwoman, Barbara is the number one reason all students at CIHS have access to modern information technology.

An English teacher states, "Barbara's energy and enthusiasm for providing the best possible learning environment in a time when budgets have been slashed 50 percent is nothing short of miraculous. Students and faculty alike search out the library as both an environmental retreat and a technological resource. Barbara has taken our school's motto, 'Where every student can and will learn,' and made it a reality for students entering her domain."

Barbara has served on both site and district committees that promote the use of technology in the library for all students. She is eager and willing to reach out to students and teachers to enable them to be successful users of all the technological resources found in her library. Throughout the year she assists teachers in effectively designing lessons that enable students to use all the library's resources.

Being on the cutting edge is a natural for Barbara. She helped create CI Dimensions, a quarterly student multimedia magazine for students and staff to read on the school's computer network. She helps the students digitize pictures and short video clips they take of school activities, write articles, and make their own computer animations.

Barbara is an accomplished staff developer and has presented numerous workshops for CUE, CSLA, the school, the district, and the county. She is a visionary eager to help her colleagues leap into the twenty-first century.
